Sophronius Eusebius Hieronymus (born c. 348/349 in Stridon, Dalmatia; died 30 September 420 in Bethlehem, Syria Palaestina) was one of the most important Latin Church Fathers and a highly prolific author of late antiquity. With his rigorous asceticism and his achievements as a translator and commentator on the Bible, he exerted a great influence on Latin Christendom. The Vulgate is largely his work. Throughout his life, he was a confrontational and much-criticised outsider.
